Decorative object or candle? Choosing when to light it

Some candles ask to be lit immediately. A sculptural candle may first ask to be lived with.

Consider the moment

There is no deadline for the first flame

You are allowed to admire it first.

A sculptural candle can spend weeks—or years—as part of an interior before it is lit. Its purpose is not incomplete during that time. Looking, living and remembering are also forms of use.

And yet lighting it is not destruction. It is another way of experiencing the object: through warmth, time and atmosphere. The question is not what you are supposed to do. It is what kind of relationship you want with the piece.

“Saving a candle can be meaningful. Lighting it can be meaningful. Intention is the difference.”

Choose to preserve

Let it remain an object.

Preservation suits collectors, highly intricate one-of-one pieces and candles attached to a particular memory. Keep the candle cool, dry and away from direct sunlight, heat and dust.

Choose to light

Let the object become an occasion.

Light it when you can remain present: an unhurried dinner, a winter evening or the anniversary of receiving it. Follow the wick, holder and burn-time guidance for that specific candle.

A third path

Live with it first. Light it later.

  1. 01

Photograph the untouched piece.Record the carving, colours and small details you chose.

  2. 02

Give it a season in the room.Allow the object to become familiar rather than rushing toward a decision.

  3. 03

Choose a meaningful first light.Make the moment deliberate and give it your attention.

  4. 04

Care for what remains.A sculptural candle may continue to be beautiful as its form slowly changes.

Your object · Your ritual

There is no less beautiful choice—only a less intentional one.

Preserve it because the form moves you. Light it because the moment matters. Decide slowly.
